Aloe dorotheae ‘Crimson’

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Crimson Aloe
Origin: Cultivar of Aloe dorotheae (Sunset Aloe), propagated by tissue culture at Rancho Tissue Technologies

Description:

‘Crimson’ is a dazzling cultivar of the Tanzanian species *Aloe dorotheae*, selected for its bold, fiery red foliage. Rosettes begin bright green with white spotting and transition to deep crimson tones in full sun or drought stress—creating a living display of color. Margins are lined with pronounced, golden teeth that frame the glossy leaves.

In winter, mature plants produce slender stems topped with tubular orange to greenish-yellow flowers that rise above the rosette, adding seasonal interest and drawing pollinators.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 10–11
  • Cold Tolerance: Minimal; protect from frost (below ~32 °F / 0 °C)
  • Light: Full sun brings out the deepest red coloration; tolerates bright filtered light

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Compact—typically 12–18 in (30–45 cm) across
  • Soil: Prefers lean, sandy or gravelly mixes with excellent drainage
  • Watering: Low; allow soil to dry between deep waterings
  • Maintenance: Minimal; remove offsets as desired to control clumping
