Aloe tongaensis ‘Medusa’

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Medusa Tree Aloe
Origin: Selection of Aloidendron tongaense (Mozambique, coastal East Africa); propagated via tissue culture at Rancho Tissue Technologies

Description:

‘Medusa’ is a distinctive form of the tropical tree aloe A. tongaense, chosen for its wild, twisting growth habit. Its branches snake outward in irregular patterns, crowned by dense rosettes of glossy green leaves with lightly toothed margins. Over time, it forms a medium to large tree aloe, reaching 12–20 ft, with a sculptural silhouette that lives up to its mythic name.

In late winter to spring, it produces branched inflorescences of coral to orange tubular flowers that rise above the canopy, drawing pollinators and adding seasonal brightness.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Tolerance: To ~25–30 °F (–4 to –1 °C); protect from frost when young
  • Light: Full sun to bright light; growth more vigorous in warm exposures
  • Heat Tolerance: High; thrives in hot, arid and subtropical climates

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Medium to large tree aloe, 12–20 ft tall
  • Soil: Needs sandy, rocky, well-draining soils
  • Watering: Moderate to low; once established, water deeply but infrequently
  • Maintenance: Minimal; prune dead leaves and spent inflorescences
