Agave montana

Family: Asparagaceae
Common Name: Mountain Agave
Origin: Northeastern Mexico (Sierra Madre Oriental)

Description:

A striking species known for its symmetrical form and dramatic leaf impressions, *Agave montana* forms tight, solitary rosettes of broad, dark green leaves adorned with deeply imprinted bud patterns and reddish-brown teeth. Its bold, formal structure makes it a favorite among collectors and designers alike.

Unlike many agaves, *montana* prefers cooler climates and higher elevations, making it one of the most cold-tolerant broad-leaved varieties. When mature, it produces a towering spike of yellow to red-tinged flowers.

  • Zones: USDA 7b–11
  • Cold Tolerance: Down to ~10°F (-12°C)
  • Light: Full sun to light shade

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Well-drained, rocky or loamy soil
