Agave ovatifolia ‘Frosty Blue’

Family: Asparagaceae
Common Name: Frosty Blue Whale’s Tongue Agave
Origin: Northeastern Mexico (cultivar selection of Agave ovatifolia)

Description:

‘Frosty Blue’ is a dazzling selection of the famed Whale’s Tongue Agave, prized for its striking powdery-blue foliage and clean, architectural symmetry. The broad, cupped leaves form a rounded, open rosette that can reach up to 5 feet wide and 3–4 feet tall.

This cultivar’s glaucous, silvery-blue hue gives it a cool, modern look that works beautifully in contemporary and drought-tolerant landscapes. Unlike many Agaves, it typically does not produce offsets, making it a tidy specimen choice.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 7b–11
  • Cold Tolerance: Extremely hardy, to ~10°F (-12°C)
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Needs fast-draining soil—amend with gravel or pumice if necessary
  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently; drought tolerant once established
  • Maintenance: Low; remove lower leaves as they age to keep clean form
