Aloidendron ramosissimum (syn. Aloe ramosissima)

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Maiden’s Quiver Tree
Origin: Native to the Richtersveld region on the South Africa–Namibia border

Description:

Aloidendron ramosissimum is a rare, smaller relative of the Quiver Tree (*A. dichotomum*). Unlike its towering cousin, it branches from a young age, forming a multi-stemmed shrub 6–10 ft (1.8–3 m) tall. Each branch ends in tight rosettes of blue-green leaves edged with fine teeth. Its compact, bushy habit makes it appear more like a giant succulent shrub than a single-trunked tree.

In winter, clusters of bright yellow flowers appear at the branch tips, providing nectar for pollinators and seasonal color against its sculptural form.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Tolerance: To ~25 °F (–4 °C) in dry conditions; highly sensitive to prolonged wet and cold
  • Light: Requires full sun and arid exposure

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Shrub-form aloe, 6–10 ft (1.8–3 m) tall and wide
  • Soil: Extremely well-draining, rocky or sandy soils; avoid heavy clay
  • Watering: Very drought-tolerant; keep on the dry side
  • Growth Rate: Slow; longevity in arid landscapes
