Arbutus ‘Marina’

Family: Ericaceae
Common Name: Strawberry Tree ‘Marina’
Origin: Believed to have originated as a hybrid related to Arbutus unedo (European Strawberry Tree); introduced from California horticultural selections

Description:

Arbutus ‘Marina’ is a striking evergreen tree prized for its smooth, reddish bark that exfoliates in layers, revealing shades of cinnamon, mahogany, and bronze beneath. The lush, glossy green leaves provide year-round color, while pendulous clusters of pink to rose-colored, urn-shaped flowers appear intermittently throughout the year — often alongside the red, strawberry-like fruits.

A mature specimen typically forms a rounded canopy with picturesque branching and rich bark color, reaching 20–40 ft (6–12 m) tall and 15–25 ft (4.5–7.5 m) wide. Slow to moderate in growth, it is long-lived and develops outstanding character with age, making it a focal tree for landscapes of any scale.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 8–11
  • Temperature: Hardy to about 20 °F (–6 °C) when established
  • Sunlight: Full sun to light shade; prefers full sun for best bark color and flowering
  • Humidity: Tolerates coastal humidity and inland aridity equally well

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil; tolerates poor, rocky, or sandy soils once established
  • Watering: Moderate when young; low water needs when mature — highly drought-tolerant
  • Fertilization: Feed lightly with a balanced, acid-form fertilizer in spring if desired
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning required; shape lightly to reveal attractive bark and branching
  • Pests / Resistance: Resistant to deer, drought, and most pests; generally disease-free in well-drained sites
