Price range: $0.70 through $1.85

Agave aff. colorata ‘Supreme’
Family: Asparagaceae (Agavoideae)
Common Name: Mescal Ceniza
Origin: Coastal northwestern Sonora, Mexico – tissue-cultured selection resembling Agave colorata
Description:
Agave aff. colorata ‘Supreme’ is a compact, highly architectural succulent known for its rugged, blue-gray leaves and dramatic presence. Native to the arid slopes of coastal Sonora, Mexico, this selection closely resembles *Agave colorata*, but varies slightly in form—hence the “aff.” designation (affinis, meaning “related to”).

Its rough-textured, deeply channeled leaves undulate gently outward from a tight rosette, each margin lined with bold teeth and ghosted with striking white leaf imprints. At maturity—often after 12 to 15 years—it sends up a towering 10-foot bloom stalk, bearing red buds that open to warm yellow and orange flowers in spring. Typically solitary in habit, this agave remains clean-lined and sculptural throughout its life.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 8–11
  • Cold Hardiness: To 18°F (-7.7°C) when well-established
  • Sunlight: Full sun preferred; light shade tolerated in extreme heat
  • Heat Tolerance: Excellent
  • Humidity: Performs best in dry to moderate humidity

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Watering: Low; allow soil to dry fully between deep waterings

  • Maintenance: Minimal; remove lower leaves as needed
