Agave ‘Blue Flame’

Price range: $0.75 through $1.75

Agave attenuata ‘Blue Flame’
Family: Asparagaceae (Agavoideae)
Common Name: Blue Flame Agave
Origin: Hybrid selection; Rancho Tissue tissue-cultured form
Description:
Agave ‘Blue Flame’ is a graceful, clumping hybrid known for its elegant form and smooth, sculptural leaves. Named for both its cool blue coloration and the way its leaf tips curve inward like a rising flame, this cultivar offers a softer, more refined presence than many traditional agaves.

Each individual rosette grows 2.5 to 3 feet tall and wide, with flexible, blue-green leaves that lack marginal spines and end in a single terminal tip. As plants mature, they slowly form dense clumps that can reach 5 feet or more across—making them an excellent massing plant or architectural feature. The blue hue is enhanced by a glaucous waxy cuticle that lends the leaves a luminous, almost ethereal finish.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Hardiness: To ~25°F (-3.8°C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun in coastal zones; provide partial shade in hot inland areas
  • Heat Tolerance: High, with adequate airflow
  • Humidity: Moderate; tolerant of varied conditions with good drainage

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil; tolerates sandy or loamy substrates
  • Watering: Water infrequently for drought tolerance; water more regularly to increase growth rate
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster with irrigation and light shade in extreme heat
  • Maintenance: Very low; remove older rosettes or leaves as needed
  • Container Use: Possible but best used in open-ground groupings or large beds

Propagation:
Clonally propagated through tissue culture at Rancho Tissue Technologies. This ensures reliable form, coloration, and clumping behavior, unlike seed-grown selections which may vary. Each plant maintains the classic “blue flame” shape and smooth leaf texture.
Landscape & Design Uses:

  • Ideal for softening hardscape in modern or Mediterranean gardens
  • Beautiful when massed in sweeps or used as a sculptural accent
  • Low-maintenance, spineless design is great for walkways and poolside areas
  • Striking silhouette in moonlight or under landscape lighting
  • Excellent transition plant between desert and subtropical zones
