Anigozanthos ‘Tequila Sunrise’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Tequila Sunrise Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Hybrid selection from Western Australian species; bred for brilliant two-tone color and extended bloom duration

Description:

‘Tequila Sunrise’ is a show-stopping medium-sized Kangaroo Paw that produces abundant flower spikes covered in velvety blooms blending pink, coral, and orange hues. The bright, sunset-inspired coloration and upright form make it one of the most decorative varieties in the series. Plants form dense clumps of strappy green foliage about 12–18 in (30–45 cm) tall, with flower stalks extending up to 30–36 in (75–90 cm).

Highly floriferous and ideal for both landscape and container applications, this variety performs beautifully in full sun and tolerates dry conditions once established. Its glowing bi-color flowers attract hummingbirds and provide months of visual interest in gardens and floral arrangements alike.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun produces the most intense coloration and strongest stems
  • Humidity: Adapts well to dry or moderate humidity; avoid prolonged dampness around the crown

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Well-draining sandy or gritty soil; avoid clay or poorly drained areas
  • Watering: Moderate; allow the surface to dry slightly between irrigations
  • Fertilization: Use a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during flowering for best color and repeat blooms
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks to promote re-blooming; prune old foliage annually in late winter
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and bred for strong ink spot disease resistance
