Anigozanthos ‘Bush Devil’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Bush Devil Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Hybrid selection from Western Australian species; developed for rich red coloration, disease resistance, and compact size

Description:

‘Bush Devil’ is a vivid scarlet-red Kangaroo Paw from the renowned Bush series, celebrated for its compact size and prolific blooming. Plants form neat, grassy clumps of slender green leaves about 12–18 in (30–45 cm) tall, producing flower spikes that rise to 24–30 in (60–75 cm). The velvety red blooms appear in abundance throughout the warmer months, attracting hummingbirds and pollinators while providing a brilliant contrast against silver, green, or blue-toned foliage.

This variety performs exceptionally well in full sun and is tolerant of heat, wind, and drought once established. Its compact stature and intense color make it ideal for both landscape mass plantings and decorative containers.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for best color and dense growth
  • Humidity: Adapts to low or moderate humidity; excellent airflow helps prevent fungal issues

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Free-draining sandy or gritty soil; avoid heavy or waterlogged conditions
  • Watering: Moderate water needs; allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings
  • Fertilization: Feed with a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during active growth
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks and cut back foliage annually in late winter to rejuvenate the plant
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and bred for strong disease resistance including ink spot
