Anigozanthos ‘Bush Tenacity’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Bush Tenacity Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Bred hybrid from Western Australian species; selected for its compact form, vibrant coloration, and heat tolerance

Description:

‘Bush Tenacity’ is a vigorous, medium-sized Kangaroo Paw featuring brilliant yellow flowers brushed with red at the base and carried on rich red stems. The vivid contrast of golden petals and crimson stems makes it one of the most eye-catching landscape cultivars in the Bush Series. Mature plants form tidy clumps of narrow, sword-like leaves 12–18 in (30–45 cm) high, with flower spikes extending to about 2 ft (60 cm) in bloom.

This variety was bred for exceptional disease resistance, strong re-blooming performance, and consistent coloration across a long flowering period. Ideal for gardens, containers, and commercial landscapes seeking durable, low-water color.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun for best color and compact growth; tolerates light shade
  • Humidity: Performs well in dry to moderate humidity; requires good air circulation

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Well-drained sandy or gritty mix; avoid heavy, water-retentive soils
  • Watering: Moderate watering; allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between irrigations
  • Fertilization: Use a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during active growth
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks after bloom and cut back foliage annually in late winter to encourage new growth
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant; bred for improved resistance to ink spot disease
