Anigozanthos ‘Sunset’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Sunset Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Hybrid selection from Western Australian species; bred for bright red-orange coloration and strong garden resilience

Description:

‘Sunset’ is a compact to medium-sized Kangaroo Paw that delivers a brilliant display of red and orange hues reminiscent of a glowing desert sunset. Plants form neat, clumping foliage of narrow, strap-like leaves about 12–18 in (30–45 cm) tall, with sturdy flower spikes rising to 24–30 in (60–75 cm). The tubular, velvety blooms range from scarlet to orange-red and are densely produced throughout the warm months.

Highly floriferous and reliable, ‘Sunset’ is ideal for landscapes, borders, and decorative containers. Its compact size, vivid color, and strong disease resistance make it an excellent choice for low-maintenance, high-impact plantings.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun for best color saturation and compact form
  • Humidity: Adapts well to dry or moderate humidity; ensure good air circulation in damp conditions

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Light, well-draining sandy or gritty soil; avoid heavy, poorly drained ground
  • Watering: Moderate water needs; water regularly during flowering, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between irrigations
  • Fertilization: Feed with a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during active growth
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower spikes to encourage continued blooming; trim back older leaves in late winter
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and bred for improved ink spot resistance
