Agave victoriae-reginae
Family: Asparagaceae (Agavoideae)
Common Name: Queen Victoria Agave – Yellow Variegated Form
Origin: Tissue-cultured selection by Rancho Tissue Technologies
Description:
‘Yellow Spike’ is a vibrant, yellow-variegated form of the classic *Agave victoriae-reginae*, one of the most iconic and beloved small agave species in cultivation. This Rancho Tissue Original features the same tight, geometric rosette and striking white bud imprinting of the species, enhanced by creamy yellow margins that add a brilliant pop of contrast to every leaf.

Compact and highly architectural, this form rarely exceeds 12 to 18 inches in height and width, making it perfect for containers, patio groupings, or jewel-box landscape pockets. Its symmetry, color contrast, and slow growth make it a long-term showpiece with minimal maintenance.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 8–11
  • Cold Hardiness: To ~15–20°F (-9.4 to -6.6°C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun preferred; part shade in extreme heat
  • Heat Tolerance: Excellent in dry climates with good airflow
  • Humidity: Performs best in dry to moderate conditions

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Sharp-draining soil; prefers sandy, gritty mixes
  • Watering: Water deeply but sparingly; allow full drying between waterings
  • Growth Rate: Slow and steady; ideal for long-term placement
  • Maintenance: Minimal; clean dead leaves as needed
  • Container Use: Perfect for pots, troughs, and tight courtyard displays
