Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’

Family: Araceae
Origin / Species: A cultivar of Alocasia cuprea, native to Borneo; known for its metallic, coppery foliage and mirror-leaf effects

Description:

This compact, striking Alocasia forms an upright habit with deeply ridged, glossy leaves that shimmer with copper, bronze, red, and deep green tones. Juvenile foliage often displays stronger copper or red reflections, while mature leaves darken and develop intense veining. The undersides typically show a rich purple hue. The leaf surface is often described as “mirror-leaf” due to its reflective quality.

Though slower growing and more modest in size compared to larger Alocasias, ‘Red Secret’ makes a bold impact as a collector’s plant or accent in tropical indoor or outdoor settings.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: Best suited for USDA zones 10–12 outdoors; in cooler climates, grown in containers and overwintered indoors
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, stable temperatures ~65–85 °F (18–29 °C); avoid temperatures below ~60 °F (16 °C) or cold drafts
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal; avoid harsh direct sun that can scorch leaves; morning or filtered sun is generally safe

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky mix (e.g. bark, perlite, peat or coco coir) to provide both moisture retention and aeration
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy; allow the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) to dry slightly before watering again; avoid letting it dry out fully or sit in water
  • Humidity: High humidity (≥ 60 %) is highly beneficial; use humidity trays, regular misting, or a humidifier
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength) every 4–6 weeks during active growth; reduce in the slower season
  • Maintenance: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain form; rotate plant occasionally for even growth
  • Pests / Sensitivities: Sensitive to overwatering (root rot), and prone to spider mites or thrips in low humidity; maintain airflow and avoid waterlogging
