Description:

Aloe bainesii, also known as the Tree Aloe, is one of the largest aloe species in the world. It forms a striking, tree-like structure with a thick trunk and upright branches that carry rosettes of narrow, recurved, dark green leaves. Mature specimens can reach heights of 30–60 feet in ideal conditions, making them one of the most dramatic architectural succulents available.

In winter to early spring, the tree produces clusters of tubular, salmon-pink to orange flowers at the branch tips, which attract birds and pollinators. Its bold silhouette and longevity make it a centerpiece plant for landscapes seeking both grandeur and resilience.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Tolerance: To ~25–28°F (-4 to -2°C) when mature
  • Light: Full sun for best growth and flowering
  • Heat Tolerance: Excellent; thrives in hot, dry climates

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Prefers sandy or rocky, well-drained soils
  • Watering: Low water needs; deep watering during establishment, then occasional irrigation
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast; trunk thickens with age
  • Maintenance: Minimal; prune old leaves and occasional branches to maintain form
