Aloe elgonica (Mt. Elgon Aloe)

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Mt. Elgon Aloe
Origin: Native to Mount Elgon on the Kenya–Uganda border

Description:

Aloe elgonica is a charming clump-forming aloe with erect to reclining stems, each crowned by glossy, medium-green rosettes. Leaves are recurved and finely toothed, often blushing pink when young. From late spring to midsummer, the plant is topped by eye-catching red flower racemes that beautifully stand out above the foliage.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9b–11b
  • Cold Tolerance: Down to ~25 °F (−4 °C); foliage may incur brief damage at low temperatures
  • Light: Full sun preferred for strongest coloration and flowering

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Rosettes up to ~1 ft (30 cm) wide; clumps may reach up to ~3 ft (90 cm) tall
  • Soil: Lean, well-draining mix essential to prevent rot
  • Watering: Once established, water sparingly—tolerates dryness well
  • Handling: Sharp marginal teeth—handle with care
