Aloe hyb. ‘Hercules’ (tree aloe)

Price range: $1.00 through $2.50

Aloe hybrid ‘Hercules’

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Hercules Aloe (Tree Aloe)
Origin: Hybrid of Aloidendron barberae × Aloidendron dichotomum; created by Kelly Griffin; propagated via tissue culture at Rancho Tissue Technologies

Description:

‘Hercules’ is a legendary tree aloe hybrid that combines the rapid growth and towering presence of A. barberae with the sculptural, branching habit of A. dichotomum. The result is a striking, statuesque aloe capable of reaching 20–30 ft tall over time, with a stout trunk and upward-branching arms crowned by dense rosettes of blue-green leaves.

This hybrid is faster-growing than either parent, making it one of the best options for gardeners seeking an iconic tree aloe with dramatic form. Its silhouette becomes increasingly architectural with age, resembling living sculpture in arid landscapes.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Tolerance: To ~25 °F (-4 °C) once established; protect young plants from frost
  • Light: Full sun to light shade; strongest form and coloration in bright exposure
  • Heat Tolerance: Excellent; thrives in arid and Mediterranean climates

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: 20–30 ft (6–9 m) tall; canopy 10–15 ft (3–4.5 m) wide
  • Soil: Needs fast-draining, sandy or rocky soils
  • Watering: Low; water deeply but infrequently, especially during establishment
  • Maintenance: Minimal; prune only to shape or remove lower branches as needed
