Aloe peglerae

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Names: Magaliesberg Aloe, Fez Aloe
Origin: Endemic to rocky slopes of the Magaliesberg and Witwatersrand, South Africa

Description:

Aloe peglerae* forms a striking, compact rosette of inward-curving, blue-gray leaves—30–40 cm across and tall—that often blush red in bright light. Tiny teeth rim the leaves, becoming more pronounced with age.

In mid-winter, it sends up a single spike of dull red tubular flowers with purplish stamens—an elegant contrast to its compact form.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 10–11 (~4 °C / 39 °F frost tolerance)
  • Light: Bright indirect light to light shade; protects from intense afternoon sun
  • Hardiness: Handles minimal frost; needs protection in cooler climates

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Compact—around 30–40 cm (12–16 in) tall and wide
  • Soil: Lean, sandy or rocky, extremely well-draining medium
  • Watering: Minimal; water sparingly, especially when wintering
