Aloe polyphylla ‘Swirl’

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Spiral Aloe
Origin: Endemic to the Drakensberg Mountains of Lesotho; cultivar ‘Swirl’ propagated via tissue culture at Rancho Tissue Technologies

Description:

*Aloe polyphylla*, known as the Spiral Aloe, is one of the most striking succulents in the world. Its name ‘Swirl’ highlights the mesmerizing spiral pattern of its foliage: five rows of triangular, gray-green leaves arranged in a clockwise or counterclockwise spiral. Each rosette can contain 150 or more leaves, forming a living geometric sculpture.

In summer, mature plants produce vibrant coral to red flower clusters rising above the spiral rosette. Highly sought after by collectors, *A. polyphylla* remains a rare gem in cultivation due to its unique growth requirements.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 7b–11 (cold-hardy compared to many aloes)
  • Cold Tolerance: To ~10–15 °F (–12 to –9 °C) with excellent drainage
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade; prefers cool, bright exposures
  • Humidity: Best in cool, dry to moderate climates; dislikes prolonged heat

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Compact rosette, typically 1–2 ft (30–60 cm) across
  • Soil: Requires very well-drained, rocky or sandy soil; raised beds or containers recommended
  • Watering: Regular during active growth; tolerates summer water better than most aloes, but avoid soggy conditions
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; forms a spiral after ~2–3 years
