Anigozanthos ‘Big Red’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Big Red Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Hybrid selection from Western Australian species; bred for height, intense color, and durability

Description:

‘Big Red’ is a robust, large-growing Kangaroo Paw prized for its vivid scarlet-red flowers and impressive height. Plants form strong clumps of arching, strap-like leaves reaching 24–36 in (60–90 cm) tall, with flowering stems that can soar to 6 ft (1.8 m). The velvety, tubular blooms are a brilliant deep red, held high above the foliage on thick, sturdy stalks that stand up well to wind and heat.

This variety is among the showiest in the genus, delivering long-lasting color and a commanding vertical presence. It’s ideal for large landscape displays, mass plantings, or as a dramatic specimen plant. ‘Big Red’ is also highly attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun for best color and strongest bloom stems
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry to moderate humidity with good airflow

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Free-draining sandy or gravelly soil; avoid clay or waterlogged conditions
  • Watering: Moderate water needs; allow surface to dry slightly between irrigations
  • Fertilization: Feed with a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during the growing season
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks to encourage repeat flowering; prune back old foliage annually to rejuvenate the clump
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and bred for excellent disease resistance including ink spot
