Anigozanthos ‘Bush Gold’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Bush Gold Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Hybrid selection from Western Australian species; bred for vivid golden flowers, compact form, and disease resistance

Description:

‘Bush Gold’ is a striking dwarf to medium Kangaroo Paw known for its dense growth and masses of brilliant canary-yellow blooms. Plants form compact clumps of upright, sword-like leaves reaching 12–18 in (30–45 cm) tall, topped by flowering stems that extend to 24–30 in (60–75 cm). Each bloom is velvety in texture and held in tight clusters along sturdy stems, maintaining vibrant color over a long season.

This variety is highly valued for its strong garden performance, clean foliage, and extended flowering period. Its bright golden tones provide an exceptional contrast to silver, blue, or green-leaved companions in arid and Mediterranean-style landscapes.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)
  • Sunlight: Full sun produces the richest color and most prolific flowering
  • Humidity: Adapts to dry or moderate humidity with good air circulation

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Fast-draining sandy or gritty soil; avoid clay or poorly drained areas
  • Watering: Moderate water needs; allow the surface to dry slightly between irrigations
  • Fertilization: Apply a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during active growth
  • Maintenance: Remove spent flower stems after blooming; prune old foliage in late winter to refresh growth
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and bred for improved resistance to ink spot and leaf diseases
