Anigozanthos ‘Harmony’

Price range: $0.63 through $1.30

Genus: Anigozanthos
Species: zerumbet
Cultivar: ‘Harmony’

Anigozanthos, commonly called Kangaroo Paw, is a striking and uniquely textural flowering plant named for its tubular, velvety blooms that resemble the paw of a kangaroo. ‘Harmony displays a stunning combination of yellow flowers on red stems. The flowers are held on tall, leafless stems rising from a clump of sword-like, strappy foliage. The blooms come in a range of vibrant colors—red, orange, yellow, green, pink, purple, and even black—and are often bi-colored. Their distinctive shape and color make them irresistible to hummingbirds and native pollinators.

There are many species and cultivars, ranging from compact dwarf types (1–2 feet tall) to taller landscape forms (up to 6 feet).

Climate Preferences:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: Typically zones 9–11; can be grown as an annual or container plant in colder regions.

  • Temperature: Prefers mild winters and warm summers; heat-tolerant once established.

  • Frost Sensitivity: Light frost-tolerant but not freeze-hardy. Protect below 28–30°F (-2 to -1°C).

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun (6+ hours daily). Tolerates partial shade, but flower production may decrease.

  • Humidity: Prefers dry to moderate humidity. Good air circulation is important.

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. Sandy, loamy, or slightly acidic soils work best. Avoid clay or heavy wet soils.

  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Keep evenly moist during blooming season. Allow to dry out slightly between waterings once established.

  • Fertilization: Light feeders. Use a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote blooming.

  • Pruning: Deadhead spent flower stalks at the base to encourage reblooming. Cut back foliage in late summer or early fall to rejuvenate the plant.

  • Mulching: Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown.

🌱 Propagation:

  • Division: Divide clumps in late winter or early spring when new growth appears. Replant immediately.

  • Seeds: Can be grown from seed, but hybrids may not come true. Germination requires warmth and patience.

🏡 Landscape & Display Uses:

  • Excellent for drought-tolerant gardens, pollinator borders, and modern landscapes

  • Ideal in containers or raised beds for seasonal interest

  • Stunning when mass planted or paired with grasses, succulents, and Australian natives

  • Frequently used in floral arrangements due to long-lasting cut flowers

⚠️ Things to Watch For:

  • Leaf Spot (Ink Spot): Common fungal issue in humid or overly wet conditions. Improve air flow and avoid overhead watering.

  • Root Rot: Caused by poorly draining soil or overwatering.

  • Snails and Slugs: May chew on new growth—use bait or traps if needed.

🌟 Notable Cultivars:

  • ‘Big Red’ – Tall, bold red flowers

  • ‘Bush Pearl’ – Compact pink variety

  • ‘Bush Gold’ – Dwarf yellow selection

  • ‘Regal Velvet’ – Deep purple blooms

  • ‘Masquerade’ – Rare black & lime-green flowers
