Price range: $0.70 through $1.20

Musa basjoo

Family: Musaceae
Common Name: Hardy Japanese Banana
Origin: Native to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan; the world’s most cold-tolerant banana species

Description:

Musa basjoo is a fast-growing ornamental banana valued for its large, tropical leaves and remarkable cold tolerance. The plant forms lush clumps of upright pseudostems topped with long, bright green leaves that can reach 6–10 ft (1.8–3 m) in height under warm conditions. Even when frost damages the leaves, the underground rhizome reliably resprouts each spring in temperate climates.

Though it occasionally produces small, yellow fruit, the main attraction is its bold tropical form and rapid growth. Musa basjoo is ideal for creating an exotic focal point or jungle-like backdrop in landscapes from coastal California to mild inland valleys.
