Yucca rostrada ‘Sapphire Skies’

Price range: $1.00 through $2.50

Yucca rostrata ‘Sapphire Skies’

Family: Asparagaceae (Agavoideae)
Common Name: Sapphire Skies Yucca
Origin: Selection from northern Mexico; tissue-cultured from a standout powder-blue form

Description:

Yucca rostrata ‘Sapphire Skies’ is a refined, brilliantly colored selection of one of the most elegant trunk-forming yuccas. This cultivar was chosen for its consistently vibrant, powdery blue foliage, which radiates from a tight central rosette atop a slender trunk that slowly develops over time. Each leaf is narrow, flexible, and finely tapered, giving the plant a strikingly architectural appearance without the harshness of more rigid species.

Unlike some yuccas, ‘Sapphire Skies’ has a softer presence—ideal for design-focused xeriscapes, modern gardens, or container planting. With age, it forms a single trunk 3–5 feet tall, eventually producing creamy white flowers on tall spikes in early summer.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 5–11
  • Cold Hardiness: Extremely cold-tolerant when well-drained; tested to -20°F (-29°C)
  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun; tolerates light shade in hotter climates
  • Heat Tolerance: High; excellent for arid and high-desert regions
  • Humidity: Best in dry to moderate humidity; requires excellent airflow in wet climates

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Prefers sandy, rocky, or fast-draining soils. Avoid clay or water-retentive ground.
  • Watering: Low water needs. Water to establish; then reduce. Overwatering in cold months can be fatal.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate. Expect ~4 feet of trunk after 8–10 years.
  • Maintenance: Minimal. Remove old lower leaves as they die to expose the trunk.
  • Container Use: Performs beautifully in large containers with excellent drainage.
