Aloe suzannae (Malagasy Tree Aloe)

Family: Asphodelaceae
Origin: Endemic to southern Madagascar (Ambosary, Itampolo regions); critically endangered in wild populations

Description:

A slender, slow-growing tree aloe forming a solitary—or occasionally branching—stem topped with a rosette of long, blue-green leaves (up to 2–3 ft long). Mature specimens reach approximately 8–12 ft (2.5–3.5 m) tall and 4–5 ft (1.2–1.5 m) wide. Leaves are lined with soft, inward-curving margins and may blush subtly in bright light.

Flowering is rare and infrequent, typically occurring only on mature plants aged 20–30 years or more. The impressive cream-to-pale yellow inflorescences can be up to 5 ft tall and often occur in late winter to early spring—sometimes opening at night and releasing a delicate fragrance.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9b–11
  • Cold Tolerance: To ~25 °F (–4 °C) with good drainage and protection
  • Light: Full sun essential for healthy growth and eventual flowering

Planting & Care Tips:
