Agave ferdinandi-regis (King of the Agaves)
Family: Asparagaceae (Agavoideae)
Common Name: King of the Agaves
Origin: Northeastern Mexico; Rancho Tissue tissue-cultured clone
Description:
Agave ferdinandi-regis is a regal, compact agave prized for its sculptural geometry and refined presence. Known as the “King of the Agaves,” this mid-sized species forms a tight, open rosette of stout, triangular blue-green leaves, each etched with distinctive longitudinal white bud imprints. These imprints often align to form triangular or diamond-like patterns across the leaf surface, culminating in sharp black tips.

Typically reaching about 18 inches tall and wide, this non-offsetting species grows slowly but steadily into a living sculpture—ideal for refined desert designs, potted displays, or collector’s gardens. Its structural symmetry, sharp definition, and compact habit make it one of the most admired agaves in cultivation.

  • Sunlight: Full sun is ideal; tolerates light shade in extreme heat
  • Heat Tolerance: Excellent; native to high desert environments
