Anigozanthos ‘Orange Cross’

Family: Haemodoraceae
Common Name: Orange Cross Kangaroo Paw
Origin: Hybrid selection from Western Australian species; bred for tall stems, vivid orange color, and long-lasting blooms

Description:

‘Orange Cross’ is a tall, bright orange Kangaroo Paw prized for its vigorous growth and vibrant, saturated color. Plants form strong, upright clumps of green, strap-like foliage 24–36 in (60–90 cm) tall, with flowering stems rising to 4–6 ft (1.2–1.8 m). The velvety orange flowers have a rich, fiery tone and are held in large, branching clusters above the foliage, making this one of the most visually striking Anigozanthos cultivars.

Highly valued for landscape, commercial, and cut flower use, ‘Orange Cross’ combines garden toughness with exceptional floral display. It produces repeat flushes of bloom through the warmer months and remains one of the most dependable tall orange varieties in the genus.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–90 °F (16–32 °C); protect from frost below 30 °F (–1 °C)

  • Humidity: Performs well in low to moderate humidity with good airflow

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Fast-draining sandy or gravelly soil; avoid heavy clay or standing water
  • Watering: Moderate; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings once established
  • Fertilization: Use a low-phosphorus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks during the growing season to encourage repeat flowering
  • Maintenance: Cut back spent flower stalks after bloom; prune older leaves in late winter to maintain clean, fresh growth
  • Pests / Resistance: Drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and bred for resistance to ink spot disease
