Agave celsii ‘Nova’

Price range: $0.70 through $1.85

Agave attenuata ‘Celsii Nova’
Family: Asparagaceae (Agavoideae)
Common Name: Nova Agave, Huntington Blue Agave
Origin: Selected cultivar of *Agave attenuata*; Rancho Tissue Technologies tissue-cultured form
Description:
Agave attenuata ‘Nova’—also known as ‘Huntington Blue’—is a bold and refined cultivar of the popular Foxtail Agave, offering wider leaves and a strikingly cool blue tone. This selection maintains the soft, spineless form that makes *A. attenuata* a landscape favorite, but with improved color, structure, and flowering behavior. Unlike the standard species, which produces a drooping bloom spike, ‘Nova’ holds its flower stalks more erect—adding to its sculptural appeal.

Growing to 3–4 feet tall and wide, this agave forms open rosettes of wide, arching, glaucous blue leaves with a smooth, inviting texture. A perfect choice for softening modern designs or adding drama to tropical and dry landscapes without the threat of spines.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Hardiness: To ~28°F (-2.2°C); protect from extended frost
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade; part shade recommended in inland heat
  • Heat Tolerance: High in coastal areas; needs some shelter in desert heat
  • Humidity: Tolerates a wide range if drainage is excellent

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Soil: Well-drained, rich soil preferred; avoid wet clay
  • Watering: Moderate; water when soil dries out but avoid overwatering
  • Growth Rate: Fast under warm, bright conditions
  • Maintenance: Low; remove spent leaves and flower stalks as needed
  • Container Use: Excellent for large pots and showpiece planters
