Aloe hybrid ‘Rooikappie’

Family: Asphodelaceae
Common Name: Rooikappie Aloe
Origin: Hybrid by Kelly Griffin; propagated via tissue culture at Rancho Tissue Technologies

Description:

‘Rooikappie’ (Afrikaans for “Little Red Riding Hood”) is a compact aloe hybrid admired for its bright scarlet blooms and tidy, clumping habit. The rosettes are small to medium in size, with green, textured leaves that develop red highlights in strong sun. Margins are lightly armed with small teeth that accentuate the form without being overly aggressive.

True to its name, ‘Rooikappie’ is most striking in bloom: spikes of vivid red tubular flowers rise above the foliage, often blooming more than once a year, and drawing hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Climate & Hardiness:

  • Zones: USDA 9–11
  • Cold Tolerance: Protect below ~25–30 °F (–4 to –1 °C)
  • Light: Full sun to light shade; stronger color and bloom with bright exposure

Planting & Care Tips:

  • Size: Typically 8–12 in (20–30 cm) tall and wide; clumps over time
  • Soil: Lean, sandy or gritty, fast-draining mix
  • Watering: Low; allow soil to dry between waterings
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; offsets steadily to form attractive clumps
